What exactly does it mean when the bottle label says Magnesium Glycinate Fully Chelated 500mg and in the Supplemental Facts the label says both 500mg and Elemental Magnesium 50 mg. My physician wants me to take 400-500 mg Magnesium/day. Is one capsule enough to meet the daily dose?
The 500 mg refers to the total magnesium glycinate compound (magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine). Out of that total, 50 mg is elemental magnesium, the actual amount of usable magnesium your body receives. This elemental amount is what your doctor may mean when recommending 400–500 mg per day. Since each capsule provides 50 mg of elemental magnesium, one capsule isn’t enough to meet that daily amount. You would need multiple capsules, but please double-check with your healthcare provider before increasing your serving to be sure it’s appropriate for you. We pair magnesium with glycine because this amino acid helps support gentle and effective absorption, and is typically well-tolerated, even for those with sensitive digestion.
